Group Coaching – Bill and Mary Beth Difley
"My wife and I were privileged to participate in a group discussion at our church led by Kaleen. We originally met many years ago when she was leading worship for a huge Sunday School class, and quickly became friends and supporters of Kaleen and Wally in their Athletes in Action ministry. Our families bonded and have been fast friends ever since. In 2016, Kaleen was in town visiting and volunteered to lead a small group of parents (or in our case grandparents) of kids or young adults with Special Needs. The purpose was to compare their respective experiences in raising and caring for these children. Kaleen began by telling her story of caring for Carri, her own sister with Downs Syndrome, doing so in such a transparent and poignant way that many there had tears in their eyes just empathizing with her. This set the stage for her asking all there to tell, as much as they wanted to reveal, about who they were caring for and what that experience and challenge was like. It quickly became apparent that some had never had any caring peer forum in which to express their angst and frustration. Our observation was that such care givers frequently feel utterly alone, unappreciated, and misunderstood as they carry out their selfless task: often a completely one-way love of another (their child) who’s incapable of appreciating their profound gift of care. Kaleen is skilled in setting a non-judgmental atmosphere where transparency becomes recognized as the key to healing their hurts and valued for what they sacrifice. It was especially notable that several of the men opened up to express their deep feelings (loss of having a normal child; guilt in being helpless to “fix’ the problem; being isolated and alone, etc.), something some admitted they had never been able to do before. What a gift of combined interpersonal skills, integrity and deep Christian spirituality, Kaleen has to offer! We highly recommend utilizing her to minister to the individual or group needs in any church, club, or social services setting."
